Walking, Eating & Sleeping Under the Rocks

After a 4 hour drive from the Algarve to Setenil de Las Bodegas, we arrived and tried to find where our house rental was located. There were lots of narrow streets that our car just barley fit through, making it hard to get anywhere. Google Maps told us to make a very tight turn that the car could not do so we decided to try another way. Unfortunately, we ended up on an extremely narrow road that took us up a large hill. It was so narrow that we could not turn around and there was no other way out besides the way we drove in.

Finally after lots of attempts to turn around, our mom hiked up to the top of the hill to see if there was anywhere to turn around farther up. We did not take the car up because we were worried that if we went up to the top and there was no where to turn around we would have to back down the entire hill. When are mom returned she told us there was no where to turn around so we decided to drive backwards all the way out. I was really scared because we were right on a cliff side and it was hard for our dad to see what he was doing.

Finally we got out, found a parking spot and walked to our house. But this was not a normal house, it was in a cave! It had a bed with a pull out couch next to it, a small table, a kitchen and a bathroom. When we were settled in, we headed out to find dinner which was much harder than we though it would be! All the restaurants were closed until 8:00 pm and we are used to eating dinner around 4:30 – 5:00 so we were all really hungry. We eventually settled for a ham sandwich to do us over until 8:00 when we would have dinner.

We played Uno to pass time until dinner (I won two out of four of the rounds). When it was time, we tried to get something Spanish but less places were open than we were expecting. We ended up walking to a pizza place because bull tail, baby eel didn’t seem too appetizing. Also, Spain is very close to Italy and we got amazing pizza. Me and our mom shared a pizza with mushrooms, bacon, and white sauce, Rylee and our dad shared a spicy pizza with chorizo, banana peppers, and red sauce. We all shared a pizza with spinach, goat cheese and red sauce. It was late by the time we got back to the cave we were staying in so we all went to bed.

In the morning we did lots of walking around the small town and it was very cool because this town was built into limestone so the rocks overhang the building. When we walked through the streets and looked up, we saw rock and not the sky!-6 It looks really cool because we could see half of a building and the rest would disappear into the stone. Setenil de Las Bodegas is a very old city with evidence of human life since the prehistoric times. The buildings were built into limestone to protect from extreme heat during the summer and cool temperature during the winter. We were there on a very hot day (35 degrees) and it was cool in our cave.

While we walked around town, we looked for breakfast which was mostly pastries so we ate a chocolate filled pastry and a mini empanada filled with apple pie filling and coated with sugar. None of those things were very filling so we drove 20 minutes to Ronda where we got churros from a Churrería which originated in Spain. Unlike the churros in other parts of the world, these churros were curly and long instead of short and straight. These churros were not coated in cinnamon and sugar but we dipped them into a rich hot chocolate mixture. After the amazing churros we wondered around, looked at gift shops and than we walked the Ronda bridge that connects old Ronda to new Ronda.

Wow, what a cool place to explore! Very cool buildings. Did it ever feel claustrophobic (too small, or cramped)? Pizza looks delicious

No it did not feel claustrophobic, most of the caves were pretty large.
